Join PAF as GD Pilot (Fighter Pilot):Male & Female Eligibility

To Join paf as GD pilot is the most prestigious and competitive entry in the Pakistan Air Force. GDP officers fly operational aircraft — fighter jets, transport planes, and helicopters. If you dream of becoming a PAF fighter pilot, GDP is the entry you need. The popular term “fighter pilot” and the official term “GD Pilot” or “GDP officer” refer to the same career track.

GDP entry is through Permanent Commission (PC) only, directly after F.Sc. PAF announced 161 GDP Course for 2026 induction. Registration opens at joinpaf.gov.pk during February and August windows.

Is GDP the same as a fighter pilot? Yes. After training, GDP officers are assigned to Fighter, Transport, or Helicopter streams based on performance. The fighter stream is the most competitive, but all GDP officers fly PAF aircraft throughout their career.

Can i apply to become fighter pilot? No: You can not apply for fighter pilot directly. You will apply for GD pilot. After training You would be assigned as Fighter Pilot after meeting PAF specific criteria during training. Your allocation as fighter pilot would be decision of PAF as per performance and health of cadet after training

Key Rejection Points for GDP

  • Any history of wearing glasses or contact lenses — even once
  • Flat feet or knock knees
  • Color blindness (any type)
  • Missing teeth or dental issues
  • ISSB rejected twice (permanent disqualification)
  • F.Sc Pre-Medical background — Pre-Engineering (Physics + Math) is mandatory

Yes. Pakistan Air Force began commissioning female pilots as far back as 2006. Ayesha Farooq became one of Pakistan’s most celebrated female fighter pilots, flying the Cessna Hawk trainer and later achieving combat-ready status. PAF opened the GDP entry formally and consistently to females, with each subsequent batch including female pilot cadets. But as explained above fighter pilot allocation would be decision of PAF as per performance and health of cadet after training

Female GDP Eligibility

RequirementMaleFemale
EducationF.Sc Pre-Engineering (60%+)F.Sc Pre-Engineering (60%+) — same
Age16–22 years16–22 years — same
Eyesight6/6 perfect, no glasses ever6/6 perfect, no glasses ever — same
Marital StatusUnmarriedUnmarried — same
Height5’4″ minimum (163 cm)5’2″ minimum (157 cm) — different
FATRequiredRequired — same
ISSBRequiredRequired — same

The only meaningful difference is the height requirement. All other standards — eyesight, age, education, ISSB, FAT — are identical. Female cadets undergo the same training at PAF Academy Risalpur as their male counterparts.

The PAF GDP initial test is conducted on the PAF E-Testing System (computer-based). It is a screening test — if you fail the intelligence section, the system closes and you cannot proceed to the academic test.

Test SectionMCQsTimeFocus
Verbal Intelligence80–90~35 minutesAnalogies, series, coding-decoding, logical deduction
Non-Verbal Intelligence80–90~35 minutesPattern recognition, mirror images, figure series, spatial reasoning
Physics (Academic)25~10 minutesMechanics, waves, electricity, thermodynamics, optics
English (Academic)25~10 minutesGrammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence correction
Mathematics (Academic)25~10 minutesAlgebra, geometry, trigonometry, arithmetic

Minimum passing score: 33% per section. Intelligence test is screened first — failure means elimination.

PAF GDP Selection Process (Step-by-Step)

  1. Online Registration — joinpaf.gov.pk, select GDP course during registration window.
  2. E-Testing — Intelligence + Physics + English + Math at Selection Center.
  3. Preliminary Medical — Height, weight, eyesight. GDP eyesight check is the strictest in PAF.
  4. Initial Interview — Confidence, communication, general awareness.
  5. ISSB (5 Days) — Psychological tests, group tasks, individual obstacles, interviews at Kohat or Gujranwala.
  6. Final Medical (CMB) — Comprehensive board at PAF Hospital Lahore or Karachi. Full body examination including aviation medical standards.
  7. Flying Aptitude Test (FAT) — Unique to GDP only. Tests hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, stress tolerance, and reaction time. Conducted at PAF Base Risalpur.
  8. Final Merit List — Combined scores determine selection. Call letters from AHQ.

PAF Academy Risalpur — Training After Selection

Selected GDP cadets join PAF Academy Risalpur — the premier officer training institution of the Pakistan Air Force, located in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Training Phases at Risalpur

PhaseDurationWhat Happens
Initial Officer Training6 monthsMilitary discipline, physical fitness, ground academics, drill, weapons training
Basic Flying Training6–8 monthsDual-control flying on K-8 Karakoram trainer aircraft. Solo flights begin after ~20 hours dual.
Advanced Flying Training6–8 monthsHigher performance aircraft. Stream selection: Fighter, Transport, or Helicopter
CommissioningCommissioned as Pilot Officer. Wings ceremony at PAF Academy Risalpur.

K-8 Karakoram — The Training Aircraft

All PAF pilot cadets learn to fly on the K-8 Karakoram, a Chinese-Pakistani jointly developed jet trainer aircraft. It is a two-seat subsonic trainer used for basic and advanced pilot training. High performers in the basic flying phase are selected for the fighter stream and move to more advanced aircraft.

Stream Selection After Basic Training

  • Fighter stream — Top performers. Go on to fly JF-17 Thunder, F-7PG, Mirage III/V
  • Transport stream — Fly C-130 Hercules, Boeing 737, ATR aircraft
  • Helicopter stream — Fly Mi-17, AS332 Super Puma helicopters

Tips to Succeed in GDP Selection

  • Start Physics and Math preparation at least 3 months early — GDP test is Physics-heavy
  • Practice intelligence tests daily — speed matters as much as accuracy
  • Maintain perfect eyesight — avoid excessive screen time; follow proper eye care
  • Build physical fitness: running, swimming, stamina training for FAT and CMB
  • Read about PAF history, current aircraft, and national current affairs for the interview
  • For females: the selection standards are identical to males except height — prepare exactly the same way
